About this deal

In an essay entitled "Animal Liberation: A Personal View", Singer describes the personal background that led to his adoption of the views he sets out in Animal Liberation. Singer himself rejected the use of the theoretical framework of rights when it comes to human and nonhuman animals.

The indispensable foundational text for the movement, new and updated with the honesty and philosophical depth characteristic of all of Singer's work -- J. Singer allows that animal rights are not the same as human rights, writing in Animal Liberation that "there are obviously important differences between humans and other animals, and these differences must give rise to some differences in the rights that each have. Animal Liberation: A New Ethics for Our Treatment of Animals is a 1975 book by Australian philosopher Peter Singer. As you’d expect given the extent of animal abuse in our society, the content can be pretty hard-hitting, but it’s not bleak or pessimistic - when I came to the end, I didn’t feel depressed, but rather energised to fight to prevent humans’ mistreatment of other animals. In addition, Martha Nussbaum has argued that the capability approach provides a more adequate foundation of justice than Utilitarianism can supply. Other activists who claim that their attitudes to animals changed after reading the book include Peter Tatchell [7] and Matt Ball. It refines its arguments in light of new evidence, equips the reader with fresh tools and advice, and shows us all the road ahead. In 1975, Animal Liberation started a worldwide movement when it revealed the abuse of animals in factory farms and laboratories.

Utilitarianism, Nussbaum argues, ignores adaptive preferences, elides the separateness of distinct persons, misidentifies valuable human/non-human emotions such as grief, and calculates according to "sum-rankings" rather than inviolable protection of intrinsic entitlements.

In Animal Liberation Now, Singer exposes the chilling reality of today’s factory farms and product-testing procedures, destroying the spurious justifications behind them and showing just how woefully we have been misled. An important and persuasive appeal to conscience, fairness, decency, and justice, it’s essential reading for animal rights supporters and skeptics alike. Activist Ingrid Newkirk wrote of Animal Liberation, "It forever changed the conversation about our treatment of animals. In the fifty years since, science has further vindicated Peter Singer's arguments about animal sentience, and the book has helped change the minds of millions.
