About this deal

the short range reliability became a bit of an issue for me until I got used to it - I often hold a unit in one hand and the camera in the other when working on my own at events." Also, it is going to be pretty hard to write about this flash, without comparing it to it's brother, the Godox v860ii. I suspect most readers will be reading this review to decide if they should buy the V1 or v860ii. So I hope my comparisons won't be an issue. That's for a pair of RC units only compatible with the latest Nikon DSLRs and Zs with a max reach of 100ft vs 330ft and comptability with every DSLR

I like what Godox have tried to do with the magnetic rim. Ie. To try and compete with Magmod. However, I’ve found in the real world that the AK-R1 kit falls well short of the well designed and well thought out Magmod system. For example, the grid doesn’t narrow the beam well enough. The AK-R1 white card makes up for the fact the V1 doesn’t have a white card built in. But in practice it's a pain to have to carry it around and it then falls off constantly in the bag. The best tool is the dome which I love using instead of the Magsphere. So much lighter and more convenient. The Snoot....gels, barn doors, I never use them It allows the camera to measure the light coming through the lens and adjust the flash power output accordingly, so you don’t have to change the flash settings manually. This feature makes it easy to get the right amount of light for your photos without additional effort. It’s important to note that your camera and flash must have this feature for TTL to work correctly. When buying a Godox flash for a Nikon camera, you should look at the TTL feature. The number of flash groups and channels This Godox V1 review isn't going to be about stats or shooting into bare walls and talking about lighting patterns. It is going to be based wholly on real world use. Capture stunning detail on a microscopic level with the Godox MF12 MF12-K2 12W macro flash. This powerful and lightweight flash unit, designed specifically for macro photography, makes it possible to capture small objects and intricate details with remarkable clarity. The adjustable head angle and focus distance give you complete control over exposure, while intuitive controls make it easy to set up and use with a Nikon camera. Yes, it would. B10 is what caught my eye because it's so compact for such a powerful flash and for outdoor use weight matters a lot, as a heavy flash up there in the air needs a heavier duty stand, sand bag etc whereas a lighter weight flash may not need quite as rugged support. A lot of people use B1's for studio work, I believe. For me the Profotos as a whole are a bit on the pricey side, my Elinchroms were bought at discounts and they have worked well, although the HS Plus radio transmitter is somewhat ridiculous in how long it takes to communicate with the flash units to obtain an update of the current settings. I think Profoto B1's in place of my current lights would have been almost twice as expensive, and it was simply not economically practical. But now the B10 and A1 are very appealing to me as portable lights, they are still expensive but at least they have benefits (I'm aware Godox seems to have copied the A1, though I read Profoto is taking them to court). Which brings up another question: do I want to fund a company that invents a really clever and useful thing (the attachment interface and modifiers of the A1, or a company who copies it and sells it cheap)? I have to say that again in this case my priority would go to the original inventor, even if they have additional costs (R&D costs money).

It is worth mentioning that the magnets are nowhere near as strong as the Magmod. So I’ve ended up losing a grid and dome diffuser at different weddings. The only way to replace them is to buy a complete AK-R1 kit! You can’t buy the accessories separately. Thankfully the kit isn’t overly expensive but it is a lot of waste just to get one part. If you are environmentally conscious then this will annoy you.

It can be used with a wide range of Nikon cameras, which makes it highly versatile for the needs and requirements of any photographer. It's so simple. My laptop charges on USB-C, my Godox AD200 now has the UC-29 charger, the Fujifilm X-T3 uses USB-C as it's interface, my portable SSDs use it, my phone uses it, Intel runs Thunderbolt through it, AMD will soon have support for the standards. Let's take this standard and run with it. Please. It is important to note that recycling time refers to the amount of time it takes for the flash to recharge after it has fired. Faster recyclability means less waiting between shots. Power output, measured in guide numbers, indicates how bright the flash will be. Look for a flash with a fast recycling time and high power output to suit your specific needs. Through The Lens (TTL)

Room to Grow

Being honest, the only ones I use are the grid and the dome. I don't even take the rest with me now to a wedding. They just sit in the box at home. You can read more about my experiences below. Top Tip - Gels In practice I always reach for the V1 first. Mainly because of the better UI. To the point that I no longer even take my Godox v860ii with me anymore to weddings. Out of the two, the V1 is the better flash. Allthough I share the lot of your views on our world I can still see why people buy the cheap alternative but I don't want to go offtopic so I won't elaborate on this.

The V1 is able to output 76W of power, identical to the V860 III and lower than the AD100Pro’s 100W. The second downside is that the shape of the head means it won't fit many speedlight specific modifiers. Softboxes like SMDV's Speedbox series do not accommodate this shape, and despite the magnets being present in the head itself, MagMod's kit doesn't fit either. Hopefully this will change like some gel kits have. Magnetic Modifiers Lithium-Ion Batteries: praise the battery gods – I don’t have to charge any more AA batteries! This was the biggest game-changer for a workhorse like an on-camera flash because I can shoot multi-day events without having to worry about recharging and recycle times. Material: the wheel and the buttons on my flash were particularly flimsy, and it could just be my model, but I found it to be a bit annoying when dialing in power on-camera because you have to use the wheel. It measures 7.8 by 3.0 by 3.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.2 pounds. The flash head tilts and rotates, so you can position it for direct or indirect illumination. Right now I'm in the middle of buying a studioflash setup and I'm very likely to buy into a Profoto system. (B10 plus duo kit) Exactly, they still ask premium prices for a product which isn't that (if so) superior to the much cheaper alternative.
